Install a Floating Shelf
Floating shelves look clean, but they put a LOT of leverage on the wall — anchoring is the whole game.

Steps
-
1
Decide what goes on it
Pretty knick-knacks: drywall anchors are fine. Books or anything heavy: you must hit studs. If no studs land where you want the shelf, the location moves — not the anchor choice.
-
2
Mark a level line
Hold the bracket against the wall, level it, and mark holes. Step back and eyeball it before drilling.
-
3
Drill and install hardware
For studs: pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw. For toggle anchors: drill the size specified on the package, then push the toggle through and tighten.
-
4
Slide on the shelf
Slide the shelf body onto the bracket. Most have a small set screw on the underside — tighten it to lock the shelf in place.
