Replace the Refrigerator Water Filter

Manufacturers recommend every 6 months. A clogged filter slows the ice maker, restricts water flow, and (worst) starts letting unfiltered water through.

Check the model on the old filter — manufacturer filters cost more but ones approved by IAPMO/NSF are reliable. Avoid bargain unbranded filters; some don't actually filter, just look the part.

Steps

  1. 1

    Find the filter location

Three common spots: inside the fridge top-right corner; in the grille at the bottom-front; or in the rear (rare). Look for a small filter cap.

  2. 2

    Twist out

Most filters turn 1/4 turn counterclockwise to release. Pull straight out. A small amount of water spills — keep a towel handy.

  3. 3

    Install new

Push the new filter in, turn clockwise until it stops. Don't over-tighten.

  4. 4

    Flush the line

Run 2–3 gallons through the dispenser to clear air and any carbon dust. The water will sputter and look cloudy at first — that's air, normal.

  5. 5

    Reset the filter indicator

Hold the "Filter" or "Reset" button on the control panel for 3–5 seconds until the light turns from red to green or off.
