Steps

  1. 1

    Sweep and inspect

Clear everything off the deck. Replace any boards that are soft or rotted before sealing.

  2. 2

    Clean the wood

Apply deck cleaner per the label — usually 15 min dwell. Scrub stubborn spots with the push broom. Rinse thoroughly.

  3. 3

    Let it fully dry

Wait at least 24 hours. Wood needs <15% moisture for stain to absorb.

  4. 4

    Apply stain "wet on wet"

Stain 2-3 boards end-to-end without stopping mid-board (visible lap marks). A paint pad goes much faster than a brush.

  5. 5

Second coat (if penetrating stain calls for it)

Some products want a second coat while the first is tacky — read your can.
